Your brakes bring your vehicle to a stop, so it’s vital that they are healthy and capable of performing their job effectively.

Brake Pads vs Brake Rotors

Brake pads and brake rotors are different components of your brake system that work together to stop your vehicle. The brake pads are made of ceramic and metallic materials, and when you apply pressure to the pedal, the pads clamp down on the rotor to slow down your vehicle. Brake pads wear down over time as they perform their job, so they need to be replaced periodically.

Brake rotors are circular discs that your pads clamp down on to create the friction needed to stop. These are typically made from iron or steel and they’re designed to last, so they don’t need to be replaced as often as brake pads.

Brake Replacement Signs

High-quality brake pads will last a long time, but various conditions, such as stop-and-go driving, heavy braking, and other factors, can affect the lifespan of your brake pads. Due to this, it’s important to know the warning signs that you need a brake replacement, such as:

  • Your brake dashboard warning light is on.
  • Your brake pedal feels spongy.
  • Your brake pedal goes to the floor to stop.
  • You hear grinding, squealing, or squeaking from the brakes.

Squeaking Brakes

Though squeaking or squealing brakes are often a sign of issues, there are many possible causes. Your brakes may squeal or squeak from a thin layer of rust that formed from overnight rain or morning dew, which should dissipate as you drive your vehicle.

They also may squeak from thinning brake pads, however, which is a cause for concern. This can be the result of the pads’ built-in wear indicator, a thin strip of metal, rubbing against the rotor, or it could be from significant pad wear that’s causing metal-on-metal contact with the rotor. In either of these cases, your brake pads need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that allows the pedal to move and press the brake pads against the rotor, stopping your vehicle. It also lubricates and prevents corrosion to your brake system. Fortunately, brake fluid doesn’t require as much maintenance as it did in years past, but it can still leak or develop high copper content that requires replacement brake fluid.
